Stoplap Darning Sampler

Regular price $20.00 $0.00

Stoplap is a Dutch term for a darning patch, a sampler on which stitchers practised their decorative darning, and were commonly stitched in the 17th thru early 20th century.  Many of the examples remaining in museums were stitched by young girls in the Burgerweeshuis (orphanage), to practice but also to display their skills to prospective employers.

Unlike other pattern darning techniques such as Kogin, Smoyg, Nyzynka, etc, Stoplap interweaves the darning in two directions to cover the repaired area with a decorative design. Although samplers are prepared with coloured thread, some of the most exquisite examples are those worked white on white – quite a challenge

Stitch diagrams and comprehensive instructions are included.

20 pages, A5 booklet, photographs and pattern chart or as digital download.
